In Iowa City, a building permit is generally required to construct, alter, or replace a driveway or patio. The city wants to make sure the work meets minimum standards for thickness, drainage, and site grading. If you are adding or widening a driveway that connects to a public street, you also need a curb cut permit from the Public Works Department. Call them at 319-356-5139 or 319-356-5140. This permit makes sure the new driveway entrance meets city standards and does not create drainage problems on the street.
Iowa City uses an online Customer Self Service portal for permit applications. You need to register for a one-time account, then you can apply, pay fees, and request inspections online. The portal is available through the city website at icgov.org. Building permit fees are based on the value of the project. For work valued between $2,000 and $25,000, the fee is $72 for the first $2,000 plus $10.80 for each additional $1,000.
